ResinObsession is for sale

I have decided to sell the business due to health issues and the time demands required to handle the increase in business.

Revenues increased from $10,000 for the first (8) months of business in 2007 to a year end projection of $130,000 for 2011. This represents an average annual revenue increase of 71% since start up. This was during a very bad economy, imagine what it will be after the economy turns around.

Initial sales were only thru EBAY. Now sales are thru EBAY, ResinObsession web site, and ETSY. The other sales outlets were developed to reduce costs (EBAY fees). In 2010, 27% of total revenue came from the web site, and in 2011 (thru July), 55% came from the web site and should continue to increase. Once the new owner is announced thru the web site and newsletter, revenue will pick up immediately.

The established customer base is about 5,800 including over 5,000 newsletter subscribers who buy on a regular basis. ResinObsession products have been sold around the world, and there are wholesale accounts in the UK and Australia.

The sale will include the remaining inventory in excess of $17,000. The inventory includes plastic molds, Alumilite products, ETI products, measuring cups, Crystal Clay, and products developed solely by ResinObsession such as ResinObsession SuperClear resin, Toobies, pigment powder, drying mats, and StirStixs. The ResinObsession brand and goodwill, professionally developed website and contents, all ResinObsession graphics including logos, product pictures, post cards, and label templates are included. The ResinObsession URL alone has been appraised at over $7,000. You will also receive vendor information, some of them ResinObsession discoveries exclusive to ResinObsession.

Excluded from the sale are silicone molds designed and made solely by Cindy.

Financial statements can be provided after a confidentiality agreement has been executed.

TUTORIAL: SteamPunk Bracelet using Mold 411, Toobies, and SuperClear Resin

Supplies Needed:-Super Clear Resin (about 4-5 ounces total)

-ResinObsession Drying Mat
-Mold #411 or #412
-Silver Beads, Washers
-ResinObsession Toobies
-Gold Metallic Powder
-Silver Powder Pigment
-SteamPunk Clip Art
-Watch Parts, Small Gears, Scrap Metal, etc.

-Elastic String

-Sand Paper/Nail File

-Mold Release

1. Spray Mold with Mold Release. Mix about 1 oz resin according to manufacturer's instructions. Add a small amount of silver powder pigment until desired color is achieved.

2. Pour colored resin into cavitied, filling only about 1/4 of the cavity. Allow to cure to a tacky, gel state (Approx. 4-6 hours).

3. While resin is still a little tacky, embed toobies as picture below displays. The toobies prevent you from needing to drill holes in the beads and should be placed where the holes for the bracelet string will go. Do not push the toobies into the resin, let them rest just on top until the resin completely cures (Approx 1-2 more hours). Note: You want the toobies to fit nice and snug in the cavity so that resin cannot seep into them.

4. Mix about 1 oz. resin, adding gold powder pigment until desired color is achieved. Pour into cavities until the toobies are just barely covered. Allow to cure to a tacky gel state as before.

5. Cut out Steam Punk images to size of cavity openings. Carefully embed a picture into each cavity.

6. Mix about 3/4 oz. of resin. Arrange embedments (watch parts, scrap metal, etc.) until desired look is achieved. Pour resin to fill cavities. Allow resin to cure until hard (Approx. 4-6 hours). ***This step can be broken down to create layers and add depth to beads.

7. When resin is completely cured, pop each bead out of it's cavity.

8. Sand edges and top to prepare for last resin pour. Wipe with a damp cloth when finished sanging to remove any dust particles.

9. Arrange beads on dryign mat. Mix about 1 oz. resin. Pour about a dime size on to the center of each bead and allow resin to flow over edges and dome, depending on desired effect. Be careful not to allow resin to seep into toobies. Allow to cure until hard.

10. String together beads with elastic string. You may want to add beads or washers inbetween each bead to prevent your bracelt from being too snug, or to accentuate the Steam Punk effect!

Cindy has been perfecting her silicone mold making process and has been unable to produce new molds. However, we found a few extra silicone ring molds in the studio and listed them on Etsy for you! Get them while you can--they sell out FAST!

Cindy makes some of the only ring molds you can find. Made of high quality silicone, the molds produce a glossy, shiny casting. Silicone molds are known for their ability to produce a shiny casting, but they are also favored because they do not require mold release! Also, for some reason, we find that our castings seem to cure a little faster in a silicone mold rather than in a polypropylene mold.

There are a few silicone molds on eBay and the website, but you'll only find the rings molds on Etsy!

Crystal Clay Butterfly Hair Barette Tutorial in 3 Simple Steps!

We're still obsessed with Crystal Clay and created this fun little tutorial for you to get aquainted with the medium.

Supplies Needed:
-Resin Butterfly Casting (We used Mold 554)
-Black Crystal Clay Kit
-Swarovski Crystals or Rhinestones
-Hair Barette Blank

Always follow the safety guidelines on the Crystal Clay Kit Box.

1. After mixing your crystal clay together, following the instructions in the kit, begin covering your already casted butterfly. You can use a bit of water to smooth out the clay if needed.

2. Begin Crystallizing your butterfly. Get creative with it!

3. Put a small ball of crystal clay on the blank part of the bobby pin. Push it into the Butterfly and allow to cure. And Voila! You have a custom, hand made, butterfly hair barette that you created in 3 very simple steps! Wear it all summer and be the talk of the town.

DIY Crystal Clay Ring

Supplies:

Crystal Clay Kit
Swarovski Crystals
Pewter Rectangle Bexel Ring Finding

Safety Precaution: Always wear gloves when mixing Crystal Clay. Gloves are included in the kit.

1. Pinch a small ball of Parts A and B of equal size and roll into a ball.

2. Mix Part A and B until it is entirely consistent and looks like Part A without any Part B in it.

3. Fit about ¾ of the clay into the large rectangular bezel on the ring.

4. Begin adding your Swarovski crystals to the clay. Use the provided toothpick with beeswax end to pick up the crystals and place them as desired. You do not need to press them in hard, as long as they are on the clay, they will dry attached to the crystal clay. You can get really creative with your crystals. Think: initials, flowers, animal print, favorite shape, any pattern or design. You can also lightly trace out a pattern with a toothpick on the clay before you add your crystals.

5. Add half of the remaining clay into one of the side bezels.

6. Begin adding crystals to this bezel.

7. Add the remaining clay into the last remaining side bezel and repeat Step 6.

You’re finished! You have a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind homemade, DIY ring that looks much more expensive than the supplies cost! Wow all your friends with your talents or have a Crystal Clay Party!

How to Use Toobies

People ask us about toobies all the time! While we never mind answering, we thought we would create an article that spells it all out.

Toobies are unique way to create a hole in a casting with out drilling a hole. For example, if you have a rectangular casting that is 1 inch wide, and 2 inches tall, and you want the hole to be in the middle of the rectange, you would cut a 1 inch piece off of your toobie to make a tiny tooby. You embed this in your casting. This means you must create your casting in 2 parts.

1. Fill the mold a little less than half way with resin and let that cast.

2. Place the toobie into the mold so it is sitting on the hard resin. Make sure the toobie fits snug! You don't want any resin to be able to seep into the hole. After you're certain you have a good fit, secure the toobie in place with a drop of resin or a drop of superglue (We like how fast super glue dries).

3. After the toobie is secure, finish up your casting like normal and voila! You have a hole in your casting that didn't require a drill.
Easy as pie, right?"

Mother's Day Coaster Tutorial

Make Mom feel special with a home made coaster embellished with your favorite picture of you both! This tutorial is inexpenside and great for beginners. Send us pictures of your finished product and we'll add it to this page and our gallery.

You will need:
Coaster Mold 893
Flower Petals
Mold Release
Picture of you and mom
Resin Colorant (optional)
Reusable Mixing Cups
ResinObsession Stir Stix
ResinObsession SuperClear Resin

1. After Mixing your resin and spraying your mold with mold release, pour a thin layer of resin in the outer circle of the mold. You just need enough to cover the bottom of the mold.

2. Sprinkle in a thin layer of petals. It doesn’t need to be perfect, we will be adding another thicker layer of petals.

3. Pour another thin layer of resin until the petals are about half covered. Allow this layer to cure until “gummy” (approx. 2 hours).

4. Sprinkle another layer of petals until you have reached your desired effect.

5. Pour a layer of resin until the basin is about two thirds full. Using the end of your stir stick, push the petals down, touching the stir stick to the bottom of the mold basin, until you are pleased with the arrangement of the petals. Allow to cure until hard.

6. Pour a thin layer of resin into the center of the mold that just barely covers the bottom. Allow to cast until hardened.

7. Cut out the picture you want as the center of the coaster (We have created a downloadable template for you to cut around).

8. After all resin in mold is fully casted and hard, place your picture in the center of the circle. TO prevent air bubbles from forming under the image, try to slide your image into the mold rather than plopping it straight down.

9. OPTIONAL: You can add color to your last pour of resin to compliment your flower petals. Follow your specific colorants mixing instructions to achieve your desired result. Pour the last of your resin into the mold, about 1 mm away from the top.

10. When fully cured, take coaster out of mold and VOILÁ! You have an inexpensive gift from the heart to give to the leading lady in your life on Mother’s Day.

Thanks! May I ask what types of vitamins you take? multi-vitamin BlueBonnet Multi-One no iron, Nature's Plus Black Cohosh time release for menapouse, Jarrow Probiotic, Life Solutions Liquid Super b-complex (I don't absorb b's so I take a liquid form), Vitamin D3. At night Carlson Chelated Magnesium, BlueBonnet Calcium. Magnesium and Calcium need each other to absorb. Best Prices I've found are online from Vita Cost, Total Health and Lucky Vitamin. Non of them carry everything that I take. I've tried other brands but they have fillers or didn't agree with my system. I worked with a nutrientionist and health food store owner to pick these brands. I do not eat preserved foods at all, not even cereal. You can try the gluten free organic cereal. Pretty much everything I eat is whole or from scratch. We rarely go out to eat ($$$) but wen we do there is no guarantee that there are no preservatives. I eat very limited amounts of foods that I do not make myself. One thing that is hard for me to cut out is sugar, Me too and the other is caffeine. I've sucessfully cut out almost all of my caffeine. It's hard and can take a year or so to accomplish it. My doctor recommends cutting them altogether but I have such a bad sweet tooth, especially for chocolate which has caffeine in it. I don't know how to find hormone-free meat . In you grocery store, there is a section of hormone, atibiotic free meats. Our Grocery store also has them in the butcher section.

I do have trouble with seratonin and melatonin, so I have to take medicine to replace them. Me too but did you know that seratonin is produced in the intestines so if we aren't eating leafy green vegetables then your body can't make the seratonin and melatonin. When I have flares, I can feel pretty depressed at the same time. Yes I know. It is not from a pity party. It just affects my system that way. I also cannot sleep without medicine. I will sleep until two in the morning, then I wake up.I use Flexiril to sleep 3 of them, it's a muscle relaxer but a side effect is sleep. Much better than the sleeping pills.

Rainbow Candy Name Pendant Tutorial

This super sweet pendant is made with real candy sprinkles and ResinObsession’s SuperClear Resin!

Material List:

ResinObsession SuperClear Resin
Candy Sprinkles
Letter Beads
Foil
Scissors
Generic Play-Doh lid (lid shown has an inner diameter of 1 5/8”)
Toothpicks
StirStix
Small file for sanding edges
Drill and 1/16” Drill Bit
Jump Ring
Ball Chain Necklace
Wax paper, freezer paper, or plastic bag to cover work surface

The first step of this project is to cut out the foil into a

circle that will fit into the lid you are using for a mold.

Pour a small amount of resin into the lid, then gently

press the foil into the resin. It doesn’t matter which side

of the foil is showing. It’s purpose is to create a background

that will show through the gaps in the candy

sprinkles. Once the foil is submerged, pour a bit more resin on

top.

Next, begin placing the candy sprinkles. I have handdivided

(yes, this takes a while) these candy sprinkles

so that I could make a rainbow swirl pattern. If you

don’t want to take the time to do this, you can just use

sprinkles straight from the container and it will be just

as colorful!

After submerging the sprinkles into the resin, begin

placing the letters of whatever name or word you want.

This lid will hold six letters across at the widest point.

As each letter is placed, slide the candy sprinkles

slightly so that the letter bead rests on the bottom of the

lid. If this is not done, they will stick up too high and

protrude through the top of the resin.

Once all of the letters are positioned, add a bit more resin

if needed to be sure all of the elements are submerged, and

if anything has slid out of place, gently reposition it using a

toothpick. Double check to be sure the letters are somewhat

centered across the lid. Check the piece again 30 minutes or

so into curing to be sure nothing has slid or popped above

the surface.

Once the piece is cured, pop it out of the lid and sand the

edges with small file if necessary.

Next, drill a hole at the top center of the pendant for the

jump ring. After inserting the jump ring, thread through

the ball chain necklace, and you have yourself a bright,

colorful, personalized pendant!

Note: If you don’t want to make a necklace from the

pendant, you can glue a magnet on the back and create

a fun piece that can be used on a refrigerator or a school

locker!

Silicone Rubber for Molds

What is a silicone mold?

Silicone molds may not be the best thing since sliced bread, but they come close—at least for resin crafting and gaming enthusiasts and artists! Silicone molds are resistant to high temperature and chemicals, can accurately capture fine detail, and they’re elastic and durable.

Silicone is a mold-making elastomer—usually made of two liquid parts, a base and a curing agent (often called catalyst), which are easily cast around an original artifact after being mixed. Once hardened, elastomers become a flexible, stretchable (which eases demolding even around deep undercuts), yet return to their original shape without distortion.

When were the first silicone molds available?

The first recorded reference to a silicone mold appeared in the 1950’s; however, the earliest referenced silicone molds where the details of an original surface was actually transferred using a mold appear to have been dental molds, referenced in a 1952 document. Commercial products for these dental molds were available from 1955 on, with fast-curing compositions appearing later.

I’ve heard that making a silicone mold is hard—requiring a gram weight scale and a degassing vacuum. Is there someplace I can have a custom silicone mold made?

Check the manufacturer’s instructions to be sure that the rubber has the characteristics you are looking for.

I’ve tried making my own silicone mold and had a disaster—it was filled with air bubbles, even though it was not supposed to need degassing! Is there any way to avoid that?

First, never pour the silicone mixture directly on the original; pour it into a corner, letting the liquid flow around the artifact. There are also formulations that are thinner and less prone to bubbling, or you can add a thinning agent. Read the manufacturer’s instructions to find a product like this, or contact Cindy at ResinObsession to answer your questions.

Plastic Casting with Alumilite’s Water Clear Resin

Plastic casting is the art of creating replicas or jewelry and other resin objects in molds with liquid resin. It sounds technical, and in some respects it is, but it is also within the abilities of most people to learn the tips and skills necessary to create their own perfect copies of needed parts or creative masterpieces.

The types of projects made with resin are unbelievably diverse: from utilitarian robotic pieces to impossible to replace wheels on models, railroad and gaming scenery with rivers of refreshing looking water, fishing lures, pen turning, glossy and durable furniture finishing to professional caliber custom resin jewelry. No matter what your hobby and interests are, there is a plastic casting resin available to see your creative idea become a reality.

Packaged in two separate bottles containing the resin and a hardener, you should gently but thoroughly combine the two in a smooth flat-bottomed and sided plastic container. It is then poured into a mold where the mixture creates its own heat which causes it to cure or harden into a durable rigid plastic replica. Pre-treating the mold with a mold release product such as Castin'Craft Mold Release & Conditioner is a good idea even when the resin instructions say it isn’t necessary. It may not be necessary for easy demolding, but it helps make cleaning the mold simpler and conditions it for longevity.

Envirotex Lite, an easy to use and beautiful pour-on plastic coating for all of your projects, air dries to a hard high gloss finish in about eight hours, completely cures within 36 to 48 hours after pouring, and best of all, it doesn’t require a degassing chamber or polishing to reach its signature shine. Made by Environmental Technology, Inc.,(ETI) it is not recommended for exterior use.

One coat of Envirotex produces an attractive, durable coating that is equivalent to up to 50 coats of varnish. Additional coats may be applied after curing by wiping the surface with an alcohol saturated clean cloth prior to recoating. Just scuff sand and then wipe clean before applying over polyurethane finishes.

Projects of all kinds receive a professional looking gloss finish with Envirotex Lite: resin tiles, bar tops, cypress clocks, wall plaques, table tops, shiny coasters, cabinet knobs, figurines, and embedded resin jewelry, model ponds and ice skating scenes.

Easy to use with no strong smell, Envirotex should be used in a well-ventilated, clean, dry, dust-free room where the humidity is below 50% and the temperature is between 70 and 80°F. Higher room temperatures up to 100°F after pouring shorten the cure rate while increasing the hardness.

Use about 4 to 6 ounces of Envirotex Lite per square foot for your projects. Mixing at 70°F makes Envirotex easy to mix and inhibits bubble formation. Once mixed, pour Envirotex immediately as you only have approximately 25 minutes of working time at 70°F, less at warmer temperatures.

Within ten minutes, bubbles will begin rising to the surface and breaking. Exhaling across the surface of your small item to break the bubbles; a small propane torch is recommended for large items.

Silicone rubber for resin molds
Silicone rubber is the material of choice for most resin molds. It has a fairly inert nature which endows it with good release properties, good chemical resistance, and high temperature resistance.
It comes in two formulations popular for mold-making: tin-cure (condensation) silicone and platinum cure (addition) silicone. Both are composed of two component materials which must be thoroughly mixed and vulcanize (cures) at room temperature (RTV) to become flexible, high tear-strength rubber suitable for casting polyurethane, epoxy and polyester resins with easy release properties.
Tin cure silicone can be poured into molds or made brushable by mixing in an additive. Even though it has a shorter shelf life than platinum cure (addition) silicon and tends to shrink somewhat, it is less expensive and does well for most resin molds.
Platinum cure silicone rubber, also known as addition cure silicone, is known for its extremely low shrinkage. A word of caution is necessary, though: these rubbers are chemically sensitive to latex, sulfur, and certain other materials. Platinum cure silicones are also used to cast prosthetics for special effects makeup and medical purposes, and for making food-compliant molds.
When using silicone rubber to fashion a resin mold, plan and prepare your process ahead of time—reading all of the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure that you have enough time to mix the two components thoroughly and in the correct ratios and to form the mold before it begins to cure (usually in 1-1/2 to 2 hours).

“Boo” Ring and Earrings

A simple project using ResinObsession’s SuperClear resin formula, this ring and earrings set will have you

all ready for Halloween!

Material List:

wax paper, freezer paper, or plastic bag to cover work surface

After mixing the resin as directed, fill the cavities about 1/3

full, then place the letter beads into the resin, positioning them

with a toothpick. Be sure that the “B” is placed in correctly

so that it will not be backwards when viewed from the front.

It’s a good idea to lift up the mold (keeping it level) and peek

underneath to be sure the letters are properly placed. Once the

letters are positioned, place varying pieces of candy sprinkles

into the resin using a toothpick. Here I am using orange and

white sprinkles. After placing the sprinkles, add a bit more

resin, leaving about 1/8” at the top. Let cure.

When this layer has cured, mix up some two-part epoxy resin

adhesive, adding a small amount of black colorant. It doesn’t

take much. I also added a bit of holographic glitter to give the

piece a touch of sparkle. Working quickly (this resin will set

up within 5 minutes), using a toothpick or a stir stick, fill the

remaining cavities and let cure.

Once cured, pop out the pieces and sand down the edges with a

sanding file. The final step is to glue the pieces onto the ring and

earring blanks. I used E-6000 adhesive, although you can also use

the two-part epoxy adhesive. Let cure for 24 hours.

The finished pieces are really fun accent pieces for the Halloween

season!

Though first developed in the late 1930’s Room Temperature Vulcanizing or RTV silicone was created to be an insulating material that could withstand the heat produced by smaller engines. Still used in the electronic industry for potting and encapsulation, it is now primarily used to make durable, flexible, and easy to use molds suitable for a wide range of casting materials.

The entertainment industry was transformed by the scenes and characters that now come to life on thanks to the development of RTV soft “skin” silicone rubbers. Platinum cure silicone is also used in the medical field for prosthetics and other specialized uses.

In addition to making strong, flexible custom resin molds that perfectly replicate the original artifact down to the most intricate details, the molds cast with it have good elongation and tear strength and excellent directional stability. RTV silicone is available in both condensation (tin catalyzed) and addition cure (platinum catalyzed) formulations, both of which are comprised of two-components which must be mixed for activation.

The two components of RTV silicone are usually referred to as Part A (silicone component), and Part B, (catalyst component). Both liquid, Part B, the catalyst, is usually of a different color— when the color is consistent and has no more streaks in it, it is fully mixed.

It is always a good idea to fully read the manufacturer’s instructions and complete as much of the mold-making construction and process as possible before mixing the two components since the open time is fairly short, anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

How to make imitation sea glass with ResinObsession Super Clear Resin

Materials:

• ResinObsession Super Clear Resin

• 738 Cabochon Mold

• Castin’ Craft Mold Release Spray

• Reusable measuring cup or a Plastic cup

• Stir Stix

• Disposable Spoon (optional)

• White glitter

• Castin’ Craft transparent green dye

• Rolling pin

• Non-stick mat (like one used for cooking)

1) Spray the mold with conditioner and leave to dry.

2) Measure your resin into a disposable cup according to the directions. I like to measure mine in level teaspoons, but you can use the provided measuring cups. Mix well and leave to stand for a couple of minutes.

3) Add a small amount of dye to the mix until it is the color you want. Add just a pinch of white glitter and mix well - this is the secret to the realism!

4) Pour the mixture into the mold until half-full and leave to partially set. I left mine inside of a hot box or under a light bulb to speed up the process, but you can let it set in a normal environment. This mold is best because it gives nice sized pieces to work with - when half-full it give a realistic sized pendant.

5) The resin is ready to be manipulated when the surface is no longer wet, but the mixture is still very soft when pushing on the underside of the mold. Keep an eye on the curing as different room temperatures and situations change the speed that it takes to get to this stage. Pull the resin out of the mold with a blunt object (you can use the StirStix so not to damage your mould), any extra bits left inside can be picked off once fully cured.

6) Tear the resin into pieces if you want smaller pieces, or for a decent sized pendant leave the blob whole. Shape roughly with your hands and put on a non-stick mat. Don’t worry about fingerprints, this will slightly frost the surface which is a good thing, and most will be lost once fully cured as it does smooth out a bit more after this stage.

7) Use a rolling pin to lightly squish the piece on the drying mat into a flatter shape so to mimic the thickness of old glass.

8) Leave to set in a cool environment for at least 4-5 hours. Then you are free to drill and do as you wish with your faux sea glass!

Casting Treasures in Resin

Casting Treasures in Plastic Resin

When mixing resin make sure that you measure your resin and catalyst (hardener) carefully. If the polyester directions say 10 drops, use 10 drops! Adjustments may be needed depending on the temperature and humidity of the room you are casting in. Resin likes 70 to 75 degrees and low humidity. Resin does not like water or high humidity.

Cover castings with plastic wrap or plastic container so dust will not get into the mold and flaw your project.

Things you can cast in resin are unlimited. Here are a few ideas: pieces of colored glass, coins, dead insects and creatures, marbles, dried leaves and flowers, nuts and bolts, rocks, seeds, beans, grains, shells, old jewelry, watch parts, fabric, paper, photos and the list goes on. For paper and photos you want to use laser print on glossy text or inkjet print on high quality glossy photo paper. You can also seal them with Ultra Seal, which is made for resin. I like to coat my embedments with resin and let dry before putting in my resin casting. This also helps to fill the cavity voids of dried creatures so you can avoid bubbles when embedding.

Items you need to begin casting resin:

· Resin

· catalyst or hardener (comes with the resin)

· disposable (unwaxed) cups or Reusable resin cups for mixing

· Some ResinObsession plastic Stir Stixs

· A Mold from ResinObsession or one you have made.

· Items to embed

· Mold release to make the castings pop out and to keep the molds in good condition.

Basic instructions, but please read the instructions that come with the resin:

1. Spray a light mist of Mold Release in mold and let dry.

2. Follow the instructions that come with the resin and catalyst (hardener) and mix the exact amounts. If using polyester resin mix amounts for first layer.

3. Stir well using plastic Stir Stixs. To introduce as few air bubbles as possible mix using a folding method (like folding whipped egg whites with batter).

4. Slowly pour the resin into the mold. If doing layers, this is the bottom layer of the casting.

5. Let the first layer cure to what is called a “gel stage”. Lightly touch with a Stir Stix to test. (Don't use your finger as you may embed your fingerprint!)

6. Carefully lay sealed or coated embedments on this first layer. Remember you are working upside down.

7. Mix resin and catalyst (hardener) for the next layer. If using polyester resin, read the directions on your containers carefully.

8. Repeat steps 2 thru 7 until you're finished.

9. Let casting cure completely and then pop it loose from the mold. Curing can be from 4 to 72 hours depending on temperature and humidity. If casting will not release from mold then it is not cured yet. You can tell it's set when it makes a clicking sound when you tap it with your Stir Stix.

10. Resin shrinks and can cause a “valley” or dip. Fill this “valley” with more resin or sand the edges with a fine grade (wet/dry) sandpaper or nail file. Very gently smooth off any imperfections on casting. One technique for sanding is to lay very fine wet/dry sandpaper in the bottom of a container with water and gently move casting over the sandpaper. This method is to keep the casting from getting too hot and melting and to control the dust generated from sanding.

11. Buff and polish the casting with a soft cloth (or buffing wheel) and plastic buffing compound.

If you want to add color
Add resin dyes (transparent) or resin pigments (opaque), specially made for resin, to
color your resin casting. You can also use powder pigment or chalk but make sure it
is thoroughly dry and using too much will make the casting soft.

MOLDS
Years ago ceramic and glass molds were used, dipping first in hot water then cold water so the casting would pop out. Many molds cracked or shattered using this method. Advancements have been made to the resin mold by using polyethylene plastic. For molding polyethylene, tiny suction holes must be made in the model to allow suction to form the plastic over the master mold. Sometimes these suction holes are visible on the polyethylene molds. These are not defects. To ensure molds stay in good condition for repeated castings, use mold release and clean your molds with soap and water. Although polyethylene has a natural chemical release quality, without mold release this quality will diminish. A sharp fingernail can make an indentation into a soft polyethylene mold.

You also have the option of making your own molds with RTV silicone or latex. Always test molds that are not made specifically for resin by putting a little resin on the back of the mold. Resin will become permanent in most candy molds.

Package returned from the UK

I have another package returned to me that the customer says they never received. There was duty owed on the package. Royal Mail has a sticker saying the item "not called for" for over a month. I know I told this person to check with her Customs Office. I've emailed HM Revenue & Customs to explain to me how the process works so maybe I can direct the next person that tells me they never received a package. This is an email I received and thought I would pass it on.

I (JoAnn) am a (graphic) artist in need of hiring a craftsperson who is skilled in creating resin jewelry. To be more precise, what I need is for someone to take the artwork I design for clients & encase it in resin within a pendant finding. I am in the Atlanta, GA area & would prefer someone local, though I suppose it really doesn’t matter. I would pay for each piece assembled as the work is completed (piece-rate basis). There would be no design work involved for whoever I hire; simply prepping the images to be embedded in resin & then completing the resin process.

The jewelry is a relatively new addition to my line. Currently, I primarily create clocks, designed from my clients’ photographs. I employ an assistant who assembles the clocks after I have designed & printed them. I mention this because the relationship I have with her is working quite well & I would like to have this same type of arrangement with whoever I find to do the jewelry.

Normally a release agent is not needed for plaster casting, but for urethane and resin casts, or complicated molds with severe undercuts or many crevasses, a release agent such as thinned vaseline and or barrier coat (such as varnish or paint applied to the mold before casting) is advisable.

TIP: Because the molds are small you may want to warm them slightly, a heat gun, microwave, or toaster oven will do. Squeeze the molds when filling to give you a little wider opening. Once filled about half way, roll the resin around to avoid trapping any air bubbles.

You can use a craft stick or a pair of tweezers that opens when pinched to make the opening wider when filling with resin. Once filled to top, lay a piece of glass over the top, this way when the resin has cured you can just snap the flashing off the cured casting. Or if you prefer once the casting has started to cured and there is an indentation from the shrinkage add a little bit of resin to fill in so you don't have to do any sanding.

Take the casting out of the mold once it has started to harden by slowly peeling the mold from the cast. Work around all the edges before pulling up the middle sections. Removing the casting early will produce a shinier casting if it doesn't touch anything while finishing to cure.

After a cast is made, be sure to thoroughly clean the mold (removing any casting residue or release agent) before storing. Clean your molds with dish soap and water. To remove fingerprints and such you can use rubbing alcohol. Store silicone molds in a clean, dry location, embed a rigid mother mold cast if possible to hold the molds shape. This prevents the mold from distorting or warping over time.

You will get the least amount of pulls from silicone molds when using Epoxy resin. More pulls when using polyester resin. Even more pulls when using polyurethane resin. Try to take castings out of silicone molds as soon as possible to extend the life of silicone molds.

Mix and pour the casting material according to the manufacturer's instructions. Fill the bottom part with resin. You may want to wrap with a rubber band to close the slit in the plug a little more. You will need this slit to remove the ring from the mold. You may have a bit of flashing from the slit when you remove the casting but that can be easily snapped off.

The top bubble part of the mold can be filled in layers and embedded with goodies. Once the top and bottom have reached the gel stage apply a small amount of resin to the castings and join the two halves. Use cardboard or other stiff backing so the molds are properly matched when rubber banding them together for curing. Or you can rubber band together and pour resin in the pour holes which is a little more advanced technique.

Take the casting out of the mold once it has started to harden by slowly peeling the mold from the cast. Work around all the edges before pulling up the middle sections. Removing the casting early will produce a shinier casting if it doesnt touch anything while finishing to cure.

I was so excited to have the new and improved web site to go live! First day went by no orders, understandable. Second day no orders, third day, fourth day... and so on. Come to find out you can't retrieve orders the way PayPal said. After a week it just seemed funny that not one order came in so I did an audit and low and behold there stacks of orders. This apology is long overdue and I don't know why I didn't think of posting it here on the Blog sooner. I apologize for the horrible ProStore ResinObsession website. I don't even like attaching my name to it. I have gone round and round with them about the orders not completing with PayPal. They are owned by the same company but can't seem to communicate. One says call the other, so neither will help. We are working very hard to have a completely new ResinObsession website that should function like a normal website. Can you believe I paid ProStore for my website but it's not mine to move?! Anyway please bear with us just a little longer and you will witness what I think is an awesome website created by Chelsea. They may be a little tricky to begin with but I think they will be well worth the effort. The silicone molds are made from a tin silicone that has a long shelf life and tough enough for many pulls. The molds are handmade by me.

Hip Hip Hooray!!! Yippee!! What a good day! Finally everything came together today; the right silicone, the right mold release, the correct modeling clay, vacuum chamber, vibrating table, and an efficient way to make multiple molds. Bubble ring molds should be ready Wednesday, and I mean a lot of them, more than 2 or 3. It feels so good when everything finally comes together. I didn't even step foot in the office today, stayed in the Studio all day. Wish I could do that more often.

How to stop resin from curing too fast.

Are you having problems with your resin curing way too fast? Is your resin curing before you can even pour it out of the cup? It's our summer heat. Try cooling down the catalyst by sticking it in the freezer for a minute or two. Still not enough stick the resin side in the fridge for a minute. Remember not to cool it down too much, optimum for most resins is about 70 degrees.
This holds true for silicones as well.

Instructions

what you need:
ResinObsession resin mold - Mold 403- 11 popular jewelry shapes was used in project

EasyCast clear casting epoxy resin (part A, B)

color powder, pearl ex pigments, purple and bright gold

reusable resin measuring cups

stiring sticks

tooth picks

timer

tissues

step by step:
1. Mix EasyCast resin following manufacturer's instructions.

2. Pour small amounts of resin into 2 seperate cups to mix in the pearl colors purple and bright gold.

3. Pour the remaining clear resin into the selected mold cavities just below the top to allow for extra drops of color.

4. Use a toothpick to pick up one of the colors and drip a drop into one of the shapes anywhere.

5. Do the same with the other colors, as in step 4.

6. The drops will settle down into the resin, not just sit on top.

7. With a new toothpick and tissue in hand, swirl the colored drops around to make shaped in the clear resin. Between each swirl clean your toothpick on the tissue. You can pull the colors into each other for mixed color affect, any shape you wish, in this case swirls.

8. When satisfied with the affects, clean your area and let resin cure. Pop resin out of molds.

9. Once casting has fully cured polish and buff if you wish. Drill a hole with a rotary tool and small drill bit or small hand drill or wire wrap for a pendant, earrings or keyring.

When I first started in resin jewellery making, I was amazed that the flexible type moulds couldn’t be bought here in the UK. It’s also one of the main keyword searches that people use when coming to my website- but it was something I didn’t offer. The best- and also best known- mould “brand” is Resin Obsession, run by Cindy Carter in the United States. Her moulds are great and I’ve been using them almost from the very start. Her range of moulds is so thorough and ideal for all resin jewellery (and ornament) makers, but of course airmail isn’t as fast as we’d like- we buy moulds and we want them straightaway!

I'm so excited!!!!! Finally Silicone Bubble Rings are almost ready! All I need to now is wait.... it's the hardest part... letting them cure.... it seems to take forever! Once they cure I will need to pour the resin making sure the pour hole is large enough and stuff like that. They may require a syringe but I thing it will be so worth it! I even figured out a way to embed in them..... WOOO!! HOOOO!!!! That will be in the instructions included with the Silicone Ring molds.

I'm working on another design that I am just in love with!!! Here is a sneak peak.... It will be a silicone mold and also sold as a kit. The sample is not finished yet it's still in my head!

The color of the stones used to make amber jewelry is often gold, but amber can also come into many various unusual colors like: black, green, ivory, yellow, red, orange and even white. Natural amber may contain insects, feathers or flowers. Its colors are a feast to the eye and it is unique due to the fact that it imprisons something, unlike other precious stones. There are amber stones 30-90 million years old and they really represent frozen moments in time. Those treasures are a way to look back into well preserved moments of a life that existed in the past.
Amber jewelry is an original choice also because it has some interesting properties. It has a nice pine smell when you rub it on a piece of cloth, it’s warm and it contains succinic acid (a substance known for its therapeutic properties). The stone is not really a stone, but a resin that can become soft and malleable when heated and that can be chiseled very easily by jewel makers. Amber can be shaped in the most wonderful ways creating unique pieces.
This unusual stone is not used only for jewelry. It is in fashion and, therefore, artists use it to create amber sculptures and to decorate beautiful unique items with it. Amber jewelry is often used as magical amulets which protect from bad luck. It is also thought that amber jewelry can heal diseases from sore throats to anxiety. So, amber is an organic gem that people love not only for decorative purposes.
Amber jewelry was not always in fashion. A long time ago, the amber stone was considered to have flaws and was rejected from an esthetical point of view. Although it had periods in which its beauty was denied, there were moments in time in which amber jewelry was used as a diplomatic gift for princesses and princes. In the mean time, people used it in powders for curative purposes.
Because it began to be much appreciated, people started faking amber jewelry and they created quite an industry. Fake amber jewelry is everywhere nowadays, but there are some inexpensive ways to see if your stone is man made or not. You can test your amber gem’s authenticity by putting a heated needle on it. If the smoke smells like pine the gem is amber, but if it smells like plastic it’s definitely fake. For a non destructive way of testing, you can also rub the amber gem with a piece of cloth and smell it. If it smells like pine, it is a natural resin. The bad taste can tell you whether it is made of plastic not. If obtained through a chemical process, the just washed amber can taste poorly. Some other clues can also tell the truth about it. Amber does not melt, but it will burn. It will float in a bowl where you put one part salt and two parts water, while plastic and copal will sink.
If you do own real amber jewelry, you have to know how to protect it and save its value for many years to come. To clean your amber jewelry all you need is warm water and a clean piece of cloth. You mustn’t use any soap or detergent on it because they might ruin the amber’s structure. Even salad oil, butter or lard can destroy the resin. Amber jewelry has to be protected from heat or excessive cold because extreme temperatures may deteriorate it. A soft cloth is needed for wrapping each piece of amber jewelry in order to avoid contact, get scratched or become dirty.
There are many legends built around amber. It is said that the yellow resin is made of tears from the sun or (in Greece) from a nymph. Amber is also present in Ovid’s work as an incredible god like material which is out of this world. Even if you don’t believe that amber has incredible powers, there is no possibility of denial that amber jewelry is special. Wearing amber jewelry will give a more mysterious and unique look because the amber stone is itself an enigmatic gem which preserves history and charms the eye.

Our first resin show (Mod Economy Fall 2008) drew a good crowd of curious folks…but this time for The Attack of the Designer Toy Show we met a lot of people that knew about custom toys and vinyl and wanted to see what we had. Knowing that the artists sculpted and poured their own resin figures was a big bonus as the idea of owning something more one-of-a-kind seemed appealing to buyers. As usual, artists shared information on casting techniques and the mold making process with the public. We even encouraged artists thinking about toy design to try it out.

The annual spring art walk was the perfect setting for Saturday April 18th’s opening reception. All the galleries were open and many made the jaunt around town to visit and see as much art as they could. At Avenue Arts Venue, Scott Higgins designed a blank DIY resin figure, Frugi, and asked Nakanari, N’reazon, Jason Ice and Jason Milstead to customize them. After lighting the shelf, we added a nice color effect to give the room atmosphere and playfulness. The custom Frugis were on the first wall as you entered the gallery.The soundtrack for the show was put together by a local DJ (Mr. RID) who found a great mix of sound effects and music from toy commercials, as well as plenty of rocking tunes like Tom Waits’ “I Don’t Want to Grow Up.” It was the perfect compilation for this mixed crowd.

Answering a recent email I'm reminded of a favorite outlook I have towards resin castings that don't come out just perfect. I look at it this way - now you know how "not" to do it. There is a quote that I love from Thomas Edison - he was asked how he felt about the 200 some failures he had before finding the lightbulb that worked and he sharply turned to the person and said "I didn't have any failures, I found 200 ways that didn't work"! So there are no failures in crafting, only opportunities for future discoveries!

For a fun way to decorate for St. Patrick's Day, try making these charming clover coasters.

Tools and Materials;

Castin' Craft 3-by-3-inch reusable resin mold#MC6

Mold-release spray

Card stock

Decorative paper

Clover craft punch

Ladybug craft punch

EasyCast clear casting epoxy resin

Plastic resin mixing cup

Wooden skewers

Glitter

Fine-grit sandpaper

Scissors

Adhesive felt or cork

Clover Coasters How-To

1. Prepare coaster-mold container with mold release spray and set aside to dry.

2. Punch clovers from card stock, and punch ladybugs from decorative paper.

3. Mix resin in a plastic cup according to resin package directions. Pour resin into prepared mold to a depth of about a quarter inch.

4. Arrange punched shapes in resin; adjust using wooden skewers.

5. Let resin set for at least an hour. Pour a second layer of resin, add glitter, and stir to combine.

6. Allow the entire coaster to cure for 24 hours. Remove coaster from mold.

7. Sand edges if there are any raised areas. Back with adhesive felt or cork that's cut to the size of the coaster.

I've started a Family! If you know me you might think this is a little odd, but ... ok.... it's not a real family.... It's COMPUTER FAMILY!!!! YAAA! WHOOO! I've smashed up old computer boards, twisted off mother board parts and taken screws that held it all together and embed them all in resin. I've taken the heart shape, small teardrop, large teardrop and large oblong from the ResinObsession Starter Kit mold and put them together in a whimsical way to resemble a Computer Person pin, magnet or tack.

I just tried something and it works, so I'm passing it on. When sealing paper/photos with modge podge, the red pigment always runs, but today I tried spraying my image with hairspray and blow dried it before I coated it with modge podge. This worked beautifully! Big hair may be "out" but there is always a use for hairspray and a blowdryer!

Zoe from Australia has a great trick for putting on the smaller bangles.. put a plastic shopping bag over your hand them slip on the bangle. Thanks for the tip Zoe!

I know the smaller bangles made from the 415 mold are difficult to put on but the new 390 mold is slightly larger and might work for some that the 415 didn't.

I finally got all the components I needed for the Bubble Ring Silicone Molds. I made the first batch today...I feel like a new Mother waiting to give birth, I'm so nervous. I hope they work. I've tried so many other ways to make bubble ring molds that just didn't work. The ones from the vacuum mold I couldn't get it out of the mold, which after I made it, it was one of those DAH moments. Well I'm caught... time to be wife and watch a movie. Cindy

I don't know if this works or not!!! I found this while researching the Glow in the Dark Powders for ResinObsession.
Mix Glow in the Dark Powder with printer ink, microwave it, (I don't know why you would need to do this), suck it up into a syringe, inject it into an empty printer ink cartridge. Once paper piece is printed turn off the lights and see your words glow in the dark.
Let me know if anyone tries this!

I just realized today 11-21-08 that I have comments on my blog! I apologize to those that have left comments and have waited for a response. Shame on me. I need a kid so I would know these type of things, that would be a great business for a high school student. Instead of babysitting or cutting grass they start a "Hire A Kid" and tutor us middle agers that have been left behind in the tech world. I would hire a kid for a couple hours a week to keep my files straight on the computer, show me blog, facebook, web site and other stuff. ResinObsession web site is now alive!

11-5-08 I spent most of the afternoon and evening yesterday populating the new ResinObsession website http://www.resinobsession.com/servlet/StoreFront. I think it looks pretty good, how about you? I did goof tho, as usual, I switched domain servers without immediately taking care of my email...oooops! I wondered why I didn't get many emails over the weekend. I thought everyone was just so busy with the election they weren't ordering anything!

I saw Fran with Little-Windows at the Quilt Show again this year. Her booth has doubled, her samples were clever and if the crowd around her booth is any sign.... I would say she is doing well. Congrats Fran!

Many of you have asked to see samples of some of my work and while a lot of it is off with vendors for shows or waiting pictures to be made in to kits, I've taken a few pictures of some pieces. Remember I'm not a photographer or very good at picture editing.

The coral and silver beads necklace and matching bangle doesn't show up as the true color but it's close enough.
The ring looks like a real stone in person.
The amber set is a technique I developed.
